Dumped overnight on a Los Angeles street, she enjoyed the final few acts of kindness from those who found her lying and unable to stand.

She munched on an apple and managed to eat some hay and drink some water for as long as she was able to keep her head aloft.

An attending vet then ended her plight.

Investigators have been canvassing door to door in the hunt for the offender.

The reward for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible now stands at $US7500.

The Southeast Area Animal Control Authority is seeking any information that could help its officers track down the perpetrator.

The horse was dumped in the middle of the night three weeks ago in a street in South Gate, a city in Los Angeles County.

The Humane Society of the United States offered $US2500 for help leading to a conviction. Denise White, who operates EAG Sports Management, added another $US2500, and the reward has since been boosted with another $US2500, this time from American footballer Jared Allen, a star with the Minnesota Vikings.

Captain Aaron Reyes, with the authority, described it as a horrendous crime.

He said the horse was dumped weak and scared in the middle of the night and he thanked White and Allen for their compassion.

Allen has a soft spot for horses in his heart, Reyes said.

“He grew up with horses and currently owns two. His dad was a cowboy back in the day, and what cowboy doesn’t love his horse?,” Reyes said.

“When I heard the story and saw the pictures of this animal,” Allen added, “I had to lend my support.”

He described the neglect of the horse as a heinous crime.

“If we don’t stop people like this, who will?” he asked.

Captain Reyes said of White: “She is an amazing woman with a passion for animals that runs deep.”

He continued: “We can’t express our gratitude enough to Jared and Denise for their commitment to helping us solve this egregious case of horse abuse and neglect.

“No animal deserves to be starved then dumped on a cold street in the middle of the night, left to wonder if their owner/family is coming back for them.”

Reyes said investigators are following up on leads and will again canvass the area where the horse was left to die, passing out flyers stating the updated reward amount.

The horse was found the 5400 block of Gardendale St, close to Gardendale Park, around 6am on July 22.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact SEAACA at (562) 803-3301 ext 250 or at www.seaaca.org. Identities of whistleblowers are confidential.

Video highlights dumped mare’s terrible plight

A video of the starved mare dumped in a Los Angeles street shows in stark detail the terrible neglect she had endured.

Stills from the video (below) show the mare’s condition as she was found.

Her head is raised, before she lies back down on the road in South Gate, a city in Los Angeles County.

A horse trailer is backed up to the mare, believed to be in her 20s, but there was to be no journey to a better life.

A veterinarian decided her condition was such that she should be euthanized.

Captain Aaron Reyes, director of operations for the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority, said some had voiced dismay over putting down the mare.

However, his agency had followed veterinary advice, which was that euthanasia was the most humane option. Among her ailments was a 10-centimetre tumour-like mass on her tail.

Reyes said the video clip, although brief, delivered a compelling and powerful message about how the mare had been treated.

She was found abandoned on Gardendale Street on the morning of July 22.

She enjoyed a mashed-up apple, some hay, and took a drink of water before the attending veterinarian ended her plight.

The case has angered horse owners around the world, who have vented their frustration on Facebook and online forums.

Reyes said investigators had begun talking to local farriers in the hunt for those responsible. The horse was wearing shoes and it was hoped farriers might cast some light on her identity.

Officers have gone door to door in the neighbourhood to hand out flyers and seek information.

Early inquiries had unearthed a sighting of a dark-coloured SUV pulling a light-coloured horse trailer in the area around 1am on the day she was found.

Reyes told Horsetalk this week that the appeal had generated information about two light-coloured horse trailers known to be parked in the neighbourhood.

He said today that the owners and horse trailers had been checked and eliminated from the inquiry.

“We have had people call and offer to bump up the reward,” he said. “If the reward grows, that is one of the things that can be a catalyst to catching the culprit. In short, money talks.”

In those discussions were successful, a boost to the reward, which already stands at $US7500, will be announced.

Reyes said the public continued to offer tips and suggestions, which he appreciated.

“We are talking to local farriers, because she had shoes on.” One farrier had already been interviewed and two more were on the list.

“Local-area stables have said they would be more than happy to put up flyers.

“In an investigation like this, it has to grow. It has to build some momentum. It has to reach out further and wider. That’s what is happening with the horse community becoming involved.”

His agency had talked to the local Spanish media in the hope they would carry the story to the Spanish-speaking population.

The offender, if caught, is likely to be charged with abandonment – a misdemeanour offence – and animal neglect, which is a felony. It carries up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $US20,000.

“I hope that day comes,” Reyes said. “This girl didn’t deserve that treatment.”
