Cheryl Foster or Churney (whatever) Has been Begging for Money – Forever

July 29, 2011 § 109 Comments

Making the rounds on the Internet, between Facebook, blogs and forums, is the story of a woman in Schomberg Ontario who has had her 23 SE Arabians seized under the Innkeepers Act.  She is $30,000 in debt to the woman she leased the facility from, and her name is Cheryl.  When first approached, Cheryl lied and said she was only the “caretaker”.  It wasn’t until later that she admitted to being the owner.

Desperate for Money

As far back as over a year ago Cheryl was begging for money on Twitter, making it sound like she was trying to help someone else (as always, click on the photo to see it enlarged, click your “back” button to return to this page).

Please Send Money

Now, a year later, most of those same horses are a body score of less than three, one is very old and riddled with cancer – but they’re headed off to auction under the Innkeepers Act.  I find it interesting that she’s in debt $30,000 but a year ago was begging for 50k…

According to one person, this owner was cash-strapped two years ago in Meaford, ON, and was unwilling to let any of the horses go for less than $10,000 – even though the horses were already thin from lack of food at that time.

A Little History

Cheryl married for the second time, a man named Bill.  They lived on ten acres near Kenora, Ontario.  In October of 1991, they received one of her mothers horses named Pride Frasha.  Cheryl’s mother bred Arabians under the name Pride Arabians for years.

According to my research, Cheryl and Bill moved to Meaford sometime in 2006.  They went by the name “Fireside Manor Arabians”.

Considering she started out a 24 hour drive away in Kenora and seemed to own 10 acres there – where they were building barns and all sorts of stuff… I’m surprised she left there to end up leasing farms.

With the addition of this first horse, Pride Frasha, they set out on a journey that brought them here… to losing all their horses to seizure and auction.

Considering they’ve been struggling for what sounds like several years at least, you would think they would have let some of their horses go for less than they were asking – to enable themselves to keep afloat and at least feed the horses they had left.  But no, breeders would never do that!

Instead, after having their first foal in the spring of 2000, within 10 years they’ve grown to 23 horses.  Amazingly, of their original breeding stock, from what I can tell approximately 7-10 horses, every single one of them is on the seizure list.  That means that at minimum they have thirteen young horses they’ve been unable to sell.

SE Black Arabians International Group LLC

At some point, they started advertising as SE Black Arabians International Group LLC.  I don’t know whether this group is still intact, or what is going on “company”-wise.  But I do know that all the horses that are registered, are registered to Cheryl.  The horses that are pending registration (which seems to be anything more than her breeding stock) are pending to Cheryl.

One of the SE Black Arabians International Group LLC ads:

We are breeders of Black SE Arabians with approx 26 in total.
We are undercontruction and still trying to find funding to get this equine faucilty completed.
We have 7 stallions for breeding.
We collect, ship, guarantine with one barn for 30 horses. Guarantine barn only. Once completed we will have over 100,000 sq. ft of building approx 140 box stalls plus a custom home.
his will be a equine estate for everyone to enjoy. We are lso doing a pool for the horses for exercise which is great for conditioning.
Have been with horses for 44 years now. We are also at this time looking for another 3 trainers as our horses are sweepstakes nominated and can win very large amounts in the ring
We are regularly Selling: es arabian horses, shipped semen, import, export, sales, artificial insemeation, frozen semen, quarantine.
We are regularly Buying: buying new breedingfor our programs, selling stock all over the world, se arbians are very rare less than 1% in the whole world.

I’m not sure when this started, as there are no dates unfortunately.

Now

I’m not sure which horse this is, but you can probably assume that most of the horses are in this sort of shape – and this pisses me off.

Poor Baby

I’m going to assume that the owner of the property (not the horses) is not onsite.  If anyone knows differently, let me know because if they were watching this mess unfold and waited until the horses were this emaciated before doing anything… I need to feature them as well.  I will say that the property owner seems to be helping out – posting auction notices, etc. everywhere.

Auction

The auction is as follows:

Claremont Horse Auction.
Date and inspection to be set by
Bill Simmons Auctioneer

Auction Update

Auction will be held at:

August 4, 2011

Schomberg, Ontario
(driveway to barn and arena off the 19th side rd)

UPDATE

These photos just recently came to my attention.

The first horse (white) is 33 years old and has cancer… but in my opinion should have been put down LONG before she reached this stage.  WTF are people thinking?

Frasha Now

Frasha Now

And a photo of one of the stallions.  While several of the horses are actually in good weight… why is it that several are not?

A Stallion

The Same Stallion

I can only hazard a guess that the stallions were confined in smaller areas away from the mares.  For example, the mares were kept on pasture, so may have had more to eat, but the stallions were penned and since there was no money to buy food… there was no food for the stallions.

Hmmm… here’s a photo of another stallion… I’m thinking I might be correct.

this is the facility that they built in Meaford; note it is available under power of sale. Another little disgusting fact about this whole story, at the end of their Meaford stay, someone gave them a substantial conditional loan for interest in the horses. Cheryl headed out and spent a pile of money on new clothing and accessories for herself…not a drop went into feed for the horses :-( With the remainder of the loan they put a down payment on a facility north of Barrie and they moved in with their horses. They were forced to leave that facility when, the property owners realized that they have no money (after upgrading the house to Cheryl’s expectations, $100K of renovations). After this they moved to the most resent place where the horses are being auctioned.

If you owned it, how did the owner seize your horses under the Innkeepers Act?
Je-ZUS you must think I’m stupid.

Even if it was a “rent-to-own” situation, the property owner could not seize your horses. The only way he can seize is that you were RENTING from him, and BOARDING your horses there.

So, what you’re saying is that I got it wrong that there are only 22 horses? That’s it? That’s your defense? So, because I mistakenly reported (off by one I might add) the number of horses, that means the rest of the article is completely fabricated, right?
      Now there’s a great defense.

And I beg to differ regarding Frasha. She is NOT “just fine”. She is skin and bones, and is quite obviously not being fed properly for her condition. Please, if you hear only ONE thing from all this, PLEASE put that horse to sleep. It’s the kind and humane thing to do. And if your vet said she is fine and in no pain, YOU NEED A NEW VET.

As I stated in my post, the rest seem to be in good weight, but I believe they were mostly kept on pasture. The red stallion is severely emaciated, as is the other stallion I’ve seen (although not quite as bad).
What date were the horses seized?
Why do you seem to have two excuses for everything? The stallion suffered a bacterial infection so he’s underweight. But it also doesn’t look like Frank fed them since they were seized…

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have some issues / doubts about some of the motives Frank has. And if he seized the horses then he should be feeding them. I also think Frank is a businessman, and he realizes he’ll get more money for healthy weight horses than emaciated horses – no matter what the bloodlines… So it’s just common sense on my side saying he probably WAS feeding the horses. I also know that volunteers have been there feeding.

If Frank seized those horses and didn’t feed them, then Frank needs to be prosecuted.

BUT, all that being said, I suspect those horses, at least the stallions and Frasha, were emaciated when he seized them.

By the way, why would you keep a stallion in a stall for two months with it being flooded. Whether or not repairs, etc., were being made, it is ultimately you, as the owner, who is responsible for the health of that horse. You should have moved him, or done SOMETHING.

I also understand he often “visits” the barn, so even your starving stallions locked in the barn wouldn’t go unnoticed by him. So he is also to blame if that information that I received is true. And I will write about it when I’ve done some more research.

If you did graduate I think you should sue the school and the government, since they failed you miserably. Please note, when you are typing, the wavy red line under the words don’t mean “great try” or anything like that… they mean the word is SPELLED WRONG.
      4) There are pastures, are there not? Horses can stand a little rain. Also, if the barn was flooded for TWO MONTHS, I’m sure you could have found another farm to rent somewhere (they wouldn’t have known your inability to pay rent until after you moved in I’m sure). And the BOTTOM LINE is that the health of those horses is YOUR responsibility. You can blame the LANDLORD (your words… oh, WAIT, does that mean you DON’T OWN THE PLACE???? HMMM, another contradiction, you should really get your story straight and not let your anger rule your fingers typing) all you want. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. END OF STORY.
      5) This POST was written in the last few days. The BLOG has been in existence for at least a year. THAT is my point. Fuck. That the blog wasn’t started this week, so how could I be Frank?
      6) I absolutely stole the photos from someone on Facebook. Someone sent me a link to the photos. I also stole a bit of info from the comments on those photos… such as the fact that you LIED about not being the owner. So there….. You don’t know me. I’ve never been to your place. I am hoping all her horses go to good homes and get the chance to know what real care is like. and I hope to GOD that Cheryl does not EVER get the chance to have any horses again, because they too will be in the same boat as these ones were. People like her never change, not when she has this all about me attitude and just looks at animals or horses in this instance as commodities. Your first line makes no sense whatsoever… again.

As for the rest of your note, please know this… as everyone’s mother used to say “two wrongs don’t make a right”.

What EVER is going on, you MUST pay your rent. If the landlord is not fulfilling his duties, then you can file a complaint. Did you approach him and tell him you would have things fixed if you could subtract the costs from the rent? I doubt it…

The bottom line is failure to pay rent means eviction. Since you failed to pay the rent, I think you were LUCKY to have 30 days notice! Some places allow a ONE WEEK notice.

What most people – who are unfortunate enough to have to rent from others – do is they PAY the rent and spend the time looking for a new place to move to. One where the “innkeeper” does a better job than Frank apparently does. It also sounds like you weren’t really doing work YOU agreed to do either.

Again, two wrongs don’t make a right.

And YOU were responsible for the health of your horses. Again, BOTTOM LINE. There is NO ONE else responsible for the way those stallions look. You and only you. Can you not see that?

I don’t really give a shit if Frank didn’t do what he was supposed to do. I care that those horses quite obviously did NOT get fed. And that is on you Cher. You and you alone.

They were worked everyday in the arena as the fencing would not hold one stud period.

Rent due was 7150.00 for June to July 4th from july the 4th to Aug 4th 7,400.00 so the bill is 40,000 now
My turn for dirtly laundry This landlord started buying hay the 15th of July on lock up then he had Bill to keep working for nothing (he did) and he did to make sure the horses were fine that ended friday so the landlord paid for 4 loads of hay 220 bales to date till auction

Wow, you bred your senior mare who has cancer? Nice. You’re really showing what type of person you are with that statement.

Of COURSE, the infection and resulting emaciation of Josh is not your fault. You had nothing to do with anything. I’m so sorry. You’re right, since the flooding was the property owners fault, even though you admitted he stood in water for TWO MONTHS in his stall… you had NOTHING to do with that. Nope. You’re Ms. Innocent.

As for going back to kindergarten, I think you would benefit from that so much more than I would. I want to point out a couple of things for you… a little spelling lesson if I may…

“Know” means you have knowledge in your head.
“No” means the opposite of yes.

Here is a little lesson on “who” versus “whom”: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/choosing-to-use-who-and-whom.html

Regarding your issues of how “incorrect” I seem to be… so far the only thing you’ve pointed out that I was “wrong” on was the fact that there are 22 horses instead of 23. What else was I wrong about? Go through my post and point out what exactly I was WRONG about. I’d love to see this.

Again, the REASONS behind why the stallions and Frasha are so skinny are irrelevant (meaning they don’t MATTER). The facts are the facts.

And just because your bill is now 40k instead of 30k (not something to be proud of by the way) is also irrelevant, since the bill will continue to increase until you are gone from the property. Duh.

And are you saying that thanks to the photos, the “buyer” backed out? What do you think would have happened when the buyer SAW the horse? Wow, you really must be on some good drugs, to think they wouldn’t have backed out of the sale the second they saw the horse in person. And if they paid and shipped, they’d have cancelled the cheque in a heartbeat. You, my friend, are living in a fantasy world.

And by the way, you might want to look up libel law: https://notabreed.wordpress.com/libel-law/

Nothing I’ve written is not a statement of fact. Everything I wrote, I backed up with photographic proof. The ads are copies of ads YOU placed. The rest of the information about YOU, I gleamed from old cashed copies of YOUR website… the same place I got the photos of the horses… don’t you recognize your own photos? What exactly did I make up? What did I lie about?

Sweetie, honey, whatever we’re calling each other now, there ARE no lies, so therefore there IS no libel.

ok in defence of the old mare Frasha and her condition-I took the photos,I have spoken at length to the vet involved -he assured me that Frasha is not in pain due to cancerous melanomas and does not need to be put down ,she is under weight -partially due to her age and also to her teeth as is common in elderly horses, teeth become very worn and require more regular dental care-which the vet determined could wait up to 90 days–I do not agree however, this is what he said to me.He ordered one of the studs have teeth done immediatley-which has been done.Frasha needs several small feeding per day of a wet feed specifically formulated for senior horses-and designed to replace the hay , which she has trouble eating due to dental condition and age.I sought and obtained written permission from Cher and the OSPCA to remove Frasha to my farm last week, however, this was stopped ,apparently by “investors” Sad— yes , the horses have been neglected however, there is more people to blame for this –others need to take some responsibilty as well. This is about the welfare of these horses and there is no need to make rude remarks about personal appearance, spelling etc.this solves nothing-can we all just do the best we can to protect the horses from ever finding themselves in a similar situation again

    • Not A Breed says:

I think I’m not in agreement with the vet either. If the horse is underweight, it is a symptom. Either of the cancer, or the teeth, or something.
It may, however, be a symptom of not being fed properly for her condition – that condition being senior with poor teeth. Senior horses need more care and attention than younger horses, especially when it comes to what and how much you are feeding. I realize you probably know this, but apparently Cheryl doesn’t. Ignorance is no excuse.

As for you being stopped by others from removing the horse – which is pathetic if you ask me – that should be addressed.
I can’t imagine why an “investor” would balk at removing one of 22 (or however many there are) horses, when that particular horse is 30+ years old… since the horse is not worth anything monetarily. That is utterly ridiculous. Pathetic. I’d love to know these “investors” names…

As for rude remarks about appearance, spelling, etc… well, half of what Cheryl writes you can’t even understand! If you’re going to go online and try to “defend” yourself, you should at least be coherent. Don’t you think?

From what I personally saw on two occasion, yes , some of stallions are kept inside as well as a few of the mares,in part I do think because the fences are not adequate to ensure their safety.I know one of the studs needed dental care, which one ,I am not positive.I was told that the indoor horses where turned out a few minutes each day into the arena-I personally watched this done with a couple of them on two separate visits,I cannot , however, say for sure if this happened every day.Yes,Frasha requires special senior care, which is what I can offer for her,I do not know who the investors are, only that I was told they refused to allow her to be removed prior to the sale on Thursday.
I disagree with the vet assessment -however, I am not a vet so can only hear his recommendations. He did say that of the two needing dental work, the stud was more urgent.I believe there is plenty of blame to go around and I am not in defence of any of the parties involved ,I became involved after inadvertently being told about Frasha, the rest I discovered when I went to see about her .While I agree ,some posts have been rambling and difficult to read,I still believe it serves no purpose to make an issue of that when the real issue is and has been for some time , the condition and welfare of the horses.I am hoping Thursday will bring an end to the poor care and find them in better conditions going forward.I am still hopeful that Frasha will be allowed to come home with me where I can provide what she requires for as long as she has the will to continue.I would then be under OSPCA notice as well until her teeth have been dealt with .My reason for taking and posting the photos was with the intent to create concern and also interest in this group of horses and to hopefully find buyers for them .This is still my only hope.

I think this was notice and not a dialogue by the poster. I only responded because I have seen the horses and thought if someone was interested then it might be worth following through when the auctioneer sets a date in due course and I am sure then all the pertinent available details will be made public to get the highest price possible for everyone involved. I may be wrong in that assumption… I just know that they look healthy and cared for so at least it isn’t a uphill battle if the papers are available, etc. for someone who may be interested it doesn’t appear to be a rescue situation, but unfortunate circumstances not being able to pay the board and now the “innkeeper” has to remedy the situation.

Now we have vets whom are not vets
I have known this lady since she was 9 years old She looked after many horses for people who could not, her money not theirs. Cheryl even had two studs for board 5 years she looked after them with no payment when the woman died she got them good homes. Horses she cared about not money. If anyone even had any idea what this lady has done in her lifetime for horses. No one even knows what is going on just big mouths and no it alls. Truth is not part of your vocabulary. I was able to work with her for years and I no that her horses had and always will have much more than she ever will have. You people are disgusting and should get your correct information before you hit the keyboard
For her spelling if you cannot understand her why would you even reply please insult someone else. Grow up people.
People should no reasons before they start spouting off at the mouth two horses Cheryl not three and yes where are the other picturses of the dieing horses.
You people have shown two with the health issues which Cheryl did say reason, one bay stud he looks good for a stud in a barn with mares now people where are the other 19 that are abused and dieing.
    You people are sick
I would suggest you go find horses whom are starving and not had a person like Cheryl

Well, isn’t this interesting. You know, the first thing that tweaked my curiosity was the fact that “Dino” uses “no” instead of “know”. Something Cheryl does too. Then I reread the comment. I noticed other things that ‘reminded’ me of Cheryl’s writing. Then, as I was writing this comment, I noticed a second comment come in seconds after the first. Another “Cheryl thing to do”.

What some people may not know is that when you comment here, your IP address is registered (only I can see it). Even if you use a different email to create a new account, that doesn’t change your IP address. Sorry Cheryl. That doesn’t quite work… what you’re trying to do. You see, you’re still using the same computer. IP addresses don’t lie.

Since you seem to want to quote what others are saying about you on boards, I will do the same:

I dont know this woman personally but i had been following Fireside Arabians for about 8 years now. I do remember when they were up in Kenora and mentioned on their website their horses were outside 24/7 in -36C weather. Well then they move down to my area (Meaford is only 30 minutes away) so i shoot them a friendly email saying welcome to the area and we should get together. Never heard a response so i left it at that and just kept watching the website. Well total non arab people and other horse folks had gone there and then come to my tack shop asking if i knew them. I said i didnt personally but had heard of them. It turns out the horses were LOCKED in stalls 24/7 now…horses that were used to being outside are now confined. The stalls reeked and their one beautiful barn was chewed like beaver had been at it. The horses were in good shape by what i heard. This was probably 3-4 years ago? Then i didnt hear much. Next thing i know i heard she lost the place. I had no idea where this Cheryl woman went or where the horses were up until a few days ago when i saw the listing for the horses going to auction. I cannot say iam surprised. This is happening all to often. WHY are people so ashamed and cannot just FESS UP and be a responsible horse owner and ask for help BEFORE it gets to this. Sell the horses for low prices or give them away. The horse market here in Canada is not THAT bad (not as bad as in the states). Sure horses are not selling for $10K but isnt a few thousand better than none? I have no use for people like this…

I never said ALL the horses were as emaciated as the three pictured (there are three, not two as you like to try to point out). And the person who posted the photos noted in the comments that the rest of the horses are a 3.5 on the Henneke Body Conditioning Scale. As all of us knowledgeable folks in the horse industry know, 5 is an appropriate score. I would even go so far as to say 4.5 for a working horse, or one that’s, say, a stallion and all the mares are in heat.
So, that is a direct witness who has seen your horses recently stating the horses are a 3.5. What do you say to that Dino/Cheryl?

Wow. I can’t even write one comment before there are three now from you?

I will apologize for letting the insults get out of hand. That commenter has been told not to do that so aggressively, although they do have their own opinions. I have a rule, no direct attacks, and I didn’t necessarily enforce that rule to it’s fullest extent. I did give them a warning, but then I didn’t follow through with a short ban like I should have. For that I apologize. I also laughed at some of the jokes (I wasn’t laughing directly at you, but at the cracks the person made, which is still wrong on my part). So, that insulting part is over. You of course are insulting as well, and that has to stop too. Fair warning to all parties.

Ok I am not one for leaving or even one to even bother with reading comments after an article but seriously??? I couldn’t help myself!!
First thing goes out to Cheryl
WHEN YOU LEASE A BARN YOU LEASE IT!!! IT’S YOURS TO TAKE CARE OF!! The landlord is that and only that. You pay him to use their property and to keep it in good working order. THE WAY YOU RECEIVED IT!
You can bitch all you want and try to lay blame everywhere else when in fact these horses WERE yours. The fact that you didn’t pay your bills and feed your horse’s properly is no one’s fault but your own so you seriously need to own that. But is see your financial state is still good enough that you have a computer and access to the internet (which by the way equals to about 3 bags of feed) PRIORITIES!!!
As for flooding in the barn easily fixed -rent or hire a mini excavator and boom your problem is fixed in a day WOW so hard. If your worried about the money?? guess what…. it comes with running a farm.
You seriously have no defence so if you had some functioning brain left you would get off every site that has said something about you and quit trying to say people are spreading lies. This actually makes you look 10 times worse. Cut your loses, pack your shit up and leave the province. Trust me if you do ever get your hands on another horse your name has spread like wildfire throughout the horse community in a matter of days and everyone will know this story and you throughout the province. You won’t have a chance in getting to board or lease anywhere. My advice and it’s smart…. take it.

I agree comments usually prove quit a bit about a person. I myself do know Frank and I also know what the farm looked like prior to Cheryl leasing. I have a friend and her son volunteering there helping out with the horses who are now finally getting the care they’ve always deserved. I will personally see tomorrow morning the shape the horses are in and I WILL be taking my camera along So don’t fret Cheryl I will get photos of the poor state ALL of your former horses are in. And my I remind you that seeing a protruding rib cage is not healthy for any horse. Even Stallions should have a bit on weight on them and FYI their feeds should be up months prior to the breeding season. If you don’t know what you are doing seek help!!
As for the situation I do understand the controversy with Franks situation and please know I’m neutral to this situation regardless to who I know, but now we need to focus on where do we draw the line as a business to recoup our money? That is the predicament I see Frank being in now. How long do you wait to get the money owed? How as a landlord do you sit by and witness what your renters are doing? Everyone knows that there is little to no money in horses these days, and the amount I understand that I owed is a lot to just let go in this economy

Interesting, I believe I visited this woman’s farm in Kenora when she lived here, the horses were stalled most of the time and when they were taken out into the arena they were nuts, they ran around with absolutely no control, I left scared for my life. Maybe the fences weren’t the problem just out of control horses. I believe the house here went into foreclosure, its up for sale again. Well Cheryl what comes around goes around, my god karma is a bitch eh? Hope the horses are fine now. Let us know in Kenora what happened in the end, just I case she cares to return here, that way we have the story straight. Pretty sure she’d lie. Thanks for the blog, very interesting.
